Why Making Money Must Be Your Business’s No.1 Priority
Every business owner I know has big dreams for their business. Some want to look after their staff and create an environment where people genuinely love coming to work. Others want to contribute to their local community, give back, or fund causes they care about. Many dream of expanding their services, running competitions, offering perks, or creating opportunities for others. And some even want to change the world.
These are all brilliant ambitions, but there’s one common thread that makes them possible. Money.
Money is the engine of your business. Without it, nothing moves forward. You can’t pay your staff properly, you can’t give your clients more than the basics, you can’t reward loyalty, and you can’t invest in growth. Money isn’t the end goal, but it is the fuel. It is what allows you to turn vision into reality.
A History lesson from around 483BC
There’s a story from ancient history that illustrates this perfectly. In ancient Athens, the city wanted to build its great navy to protect against the growing threat of Persia. They had the vision. They had the will. But what they didn’t have was the money.
Then came the discovery of a massive silver mine in Laurion around 483 BC. The city suddenly had access to wealth it had never seen before. The leader, Themistocles, made a controversial decision, instead of distributing the silver to the citizens, he convinced them to invest it in building warships.
That silver turned into the Athenian fleet, which went on to defeat the Persians at the Battle of Salamis. That single decision not only saved Athens from destruction but also ushered in a golden age where art, philosophy, and democracy flourished.
Athens could only achieve its higher goals of culture, democracy, and influence, because it had the money first. Vision alone wasn’t enough.
Your business is no different
As a business owner, the principle is exactly the same. You want to build a great company, contribute to society, and achieve your bigger mission. But until money is consistently flowing into your business, those goals remain dreams.
When you make money the priority, everything else becomes possible. You can hire and reward the best people. You can give back without hurting your cash flow. You can create opportunities for others. You can innovate, expand, and reach further than you thought possible.
Money gives you choices. It gives you freedom. It allows you to say yes to opportunities instead of worrying about how to pay the bills. And most importantly, it gives you the means to live out the vision you started the business for in the first place.
Are you making money your No.1 priority? Get the money right, and you’ll have the power to make a real difference. Just like Themistocles in Athens, your golden age will only come once the silver is in the bank.
